904L Stainless Steel Wire Mesh Supplied by Oshwin Overseas is a non-stabilized low carbon high alloy austenitic stainless steel. The addition of copper to this grade gives it greatly improved resistance to strong reducing acids, particularly sulphuric acid. It is also highly resistant to chloride attack – pitting / crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. 904L Stainless Steel is non-magnetic in all conditions and has excellent weldability and formability. The austenitic structure also gives this grade excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures.
Stainless Steel Wire Mesh is generally classified in following types –
Plain Weave – Plain Weave Wire Mesh Stainless Steel is the most commonly used weave. Openings are square. Each weft wire passes alternately above and below each warp wire and vice versa. Warp and weft wire diameters are generally the same. It produces screens with the same mesh count in both directions. Plain weave meshes are available with apertures from 10.7mm (2 mesh) to 0.05mm (325 mesh). Suitable for many commercial applications.
Twill Weave (TW) – Twill weave Wire Mesh Stainless Steel can be made from larger diameter wires than would be possible in plain square weave to obtain greater strength, density, or corrosion resistance. Twill weave is stronger than plain weave. Each weft wire alternately crosses over two, then under two, warp wires producing a diagonal pattern. The wire diameter for both warp and weft is normally the same. Twill weave is usually used to accommodate a heavier than standard wire diameter in association with a given mesh.
Plain Dutch Weave Wire Mesh – Woven in an over and under pattern, but warp wires are heavier — larger in diameter — than shute wires which are driven very close to create a high density wire mesh with much lower flow rates and much higher particle retention than plain square weaves.
Twill Dutch Weave Wire Mesh – Similar to Plain Dutch except woven in the Twill Style. Each wire passes over two wires then under two wires, still utilizing a smaller-diameter shute wire, allowing an even tighter weave and even finer filtration than Plain Dutch Weave.

904L Wire Mesh Corrosion Resistance
904L gives good resistance to both organic and inorganic acids.The addition of copper in 904L grade gives excellent corrosion resistance against nickel stainless steels, to sulphuric, phosphoric, acetic acids, hydrochloric acids, etc. It also gives a high resistance to pitting in chloride solutions, an excellent resistance to both crevice and stress corrosion cracking.The 904L is much better than austenitic stainless steels due to the higher alloying of nickel and molybdenum.The high percentage of chromium content in 904L gives and maintains a passive film which protects the material in many corrosive environments.
904L Wire Mesh Cold Forming
Cold forming 904L can be done easily. The composition of molybdenum and nitrogen implies more powerful processing equipment may be needed.Most of the time more common methods like cooling with air or water etc are used.
904L Wire Mesh Hot Forming
Hot and heat forming should be done after uniform heating.Complete annealing should be done before any hot forming in order to retain maximum ductility and corrosion resistance property. It is very important that the whole process should be done above 1100°C.
904L Wire Mesh Machining
The machining of 904L requires proper care to achieve the expected result. The cutting speed should be slow and proper care should be taken while doing so.
904L Wire Mesh Welding
The 904L material should be allowed to cool in between, preferably to below 150°C temperatures. To obtain good welding properties welded condition, filler material shall be used.Because of high thermal expansion, welding must be carefully planned in advance to ensure that distortion of the welded joint can be kept under control.
904L Wire Mesh Heat Treatment
The heat treatment should be accompanied by cooling in water or air immediately. This treatment should be applied for both solution annealing and stress relieving from the 904L material.
